Why I support ‘Iolani School

'Iolani School has given me lifelong friends and memories that I will forever treasure. I appreciate the guidance given to me by my teachers and coaches. As an institution, the commitment to excellence at 'Iolani is second to none.

As a student-athlete at 'Iolani, I was fortunate to have highly successful coaches -- coaches of championship teams. But championships don't define them. Rather, they were great because they were able to use athletics as a vessel to teach lessons that prepared us for life in college and the real world.

"One Team" is more than a motto, it is a fundamental principle that is integrated within all facets of the school from the classroom to the field of play. My coaches reinforced that the strength of the team is far greater than that of the individual. They taught me leadership, responsibility, teamwork, time management, accountability, work ethic, and how to react when faced with adversity.

I remain friends with my former coaches; they are friendships that I hold dear. They have inspired me to become a coach in my own right. I preach the "One Team" philosophy with great success to my players. I, too, use basketball as a vessel now, and pass on the wisdom that was given to me during my time at 'Iolani.

I am not alone. Many of my fellow alumni continuously share their knowledge gained at 'Iolani as an initiative to affect positive change in their communities.

I give to the 'Iolani Fund because 'Iolani's impact on young people spreads far beyond its walls.

Please join me.
