Testing
All candidates to grades 6 – 11 take the SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMISSION TEST. Register online at www.ssat.org and arrange to have the scores sent to us. Our school code is 4144. To make sure that we receive the scores in time for consideration, candidates must test on one of the following sessions:
- October 2012
- November 2012
- December 2012
- January 2013
Candidates for grade 12 submit a copy of their scores on the PSAT, SAT and/or ACT college entrance exam. They do not take the SSAT.
Report cards and school records
Please make sure that we receive the following school reports:
- By December 15, 2012
- The final 2011-12 report card
- The first quarter/trimester report card for 2012-13
- If applying to grade 12, a transcript from grades 9 and 10
- By February 10, 2013
- The first semester report card for 2012-13
- If available, a copy of the most recent standardized test scores (i.e. HSA, ERB, ITBS, Terra Nova, SAT etc.)
Recommendation forms for teachers and mentors
We require two Teacher Reference Report forms from academic teachers (English, Math, History, Science). We do not require the Mentor Reference Report, but we encourage students involved in extra-curricular activities to ask their coaches, music teachers or club leaders to submit them. A rule of thumb: one reference report should be submitted per activity.
Download the forms listed below or use those mailed to you in your application packet. Read the directions carefully. Complete and sign the release statement on each form, and ask the teachers and mentors to return the completed forms directly to us between December 1 and January 31.
Provide the teachers and mentors with stamped envelopes addressed to:
'Iolani School
Office of Admission
563 Kamoku Street
Honolulu, HI 96826

Saturday activity session or interview
Candidates for grade 6 attend an activity session on campus, and candidates for grades 7 – 12 come to 'Iolani for a personal interview. Parents receive notification at least two weeks prior to the scheduled appointment, and both parents are encouraged to attend the activity session/interview.
- Activity sessions for grade 6: November 2012 or December 2012 or January 2013
- Interviews for grades 7 - 12: November 2012, January 2013 or February 2013
Off-island candidates
If you do not live on Oahu, you are not required to come to campus for the activity session or interview. Instead, we encourage you to submit a personal statement in which you describe yourself and your reasons for wanting to attend 'Iolani. The personal statement should be submitted by February 10, 2013.
Please be sure to indicate on the application if you are willing to come to campus for the activity session or interview. Otherwise, you will not be scheduled for one.
Decision
If you meet all the deadlines, you can expect to receive a decision letter from us no later than March 30. If offered admission, you have until April 15, the HAIS Common Reply Date, to respond.
