Boys applying to kindergarten must turn 5 by June 30, 2009. Girls must turn 5 by September 30, 2009. All ESL testing is done at `Iolani School; requirements vary depending on grade level and English language proficiency. Since `Iolani has no boarding facilities, at least one parent must live with the student on Oahu while he/she attends `Iolani.
Here are step-by-step instructions for completing the ESL application process. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Apply
Obtain an application by calling us at (808) 943-2222 and asking us to mail you an ESL application packet. Online applications are not available to ESL candidates.
Complete the application and return it by the deadline above. Include a copy of your child's birth certificate or passport, a photo (not required, but recommended), the completed parent questionnaire, and the $100 application fee to:

Kindergarten candidates:

- Group readiness session ~ scheduled on a Saturday morning in January or February
- Individual language screening ~ scheduled on a weekday in January
Off island candidates should contact our office at (808) 943-2222 so that we can arrange to have tests administered within a two-day period.
Candidates for Grades 6 – 8:
All candidates take the SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMISSION TEST (SSAT). Register online at www.ssat.org and arrange to have the scores sent to us. Our school code is 4144. To make sure that we receive the scores in time for consideration, register your son/daughter for one of the following test dates:

- November 8, 2008
- December 13, 2008
- January 10, 2009
In addition to the SSAT, all candidates take aptitude and language screening tests at `Iolani. After we receive your completed application, we will schedule your son/daughter for testing.

Recommendation Forms for Teachers and Mentors
We require one Teacher Reference Report for kindergarten candidates, and two for candidates applying to grades 6 – 8. We do not require the Mentor Reference Report, but we encourage students involved in extra-curricular activities to ask their coaches, music teachers or club leaders to submit them.
Download the forms below or use those mailed to you in your application packet. Read the directions carefully. Complete and sign the release statement on each form, and ask the teachers and mentors to return the completed forms directly to us between December 1 and January 31.
