Test

All candidates to grades 6 – 11 take the SECONDARY SCHOOL ADMISSION TEST.  Register online at www.ssat.org and arrange to have the scores sent to us.  Our school code is 4144.  To make sure that we receive the scores in time for consideration, candidates must test on one of the following dates:

  • October 11, 2008
  • November 8, 2008
  • December 13, 2008
  • January 10, 2009

Candidates for 12th grade submit a copy of their scores on the PSAT, SAT and/or ACT college entrance exam.  They do not take the SSAT.

Report Cards and School Records

In place of traditional school records, the adult(s) responsible for home-schooling should submit the following by January 31.

  • Philosophy:  What philosophy guides your approach to home-schooling?  How long has the candidate been home-schooled?  Are there other siblings or students involved?
  • Curriculum:  What texts and resources have been used last year and this year in the candidate’s home-schooling experience?  Please provide syllabi, if available.  What subjects have been covered in the last two years?
  • Transcripts:  Please submit grades for last year and this year to date.  Grades may be in alphabetic, numeric or narrative form.  Please include grades for any classes being taken at other academic institutions.

Recommendation Forms for Teachers and Mentors

It is appropriate for the parent to complete the Teacher Reference Report if he/she is the teacher.  Please submit additional recommendations from adults, other than the home-school teacher who have knowledge of the candidate’s ability.

Download the forms listed below or use those mailed to you in your application packet.  Read the directions carefully.  If someone, other than the parent, is completing the form, sign the release statement and ask that person to return the completed form directly to us between December 1 and January 31.

Saturday Activity Session or Interview

6th grade candidates attend an activity session on campus, and candidates for grades 7 – 12 come to `Iolani for a personal interview.  Parents receive notification at least two weeks prior to the scheduled appointment, and both parents are encouraged to attend the activity session/interview.
  • Activity sessions for grade 6:  November 22, January 17 and January 24
  • Interviews for grades 7 – 12:   November 22, January 17, January 24, January 31, February 7

Off Island Candidates

If you do not live on Oahu, you are not required to come to campus for the activity session or interview.  Instead, we encourage you to submit a personal statement in which you describe yourself and your reasons for wanting to attend `Iolani.  The personal statement should be submitted by February 10.

Please be sure to indicate on the application if you are willing to come to campus for the activity session or interview.  Otherwise, we will not automatically schedule you for one.
