Orff Ensemble

Orff Ensemble

Based on the teachings of Carl Orff, this ensemble of sixth graders uses recorders, barred instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels), and other percussion instruments.

The layering on of many parts makes this experience similar to that of an orchestra or band, where each individual part contributes to the beauty of the final product.  However, in this ensemble students become proficient on multiple instruments, and are able to move comfortably from one instrument to another.

Students are provided group and individual instruction in each session.

This is a performance ensemble.  All music is memorized, and in most cases students learn all the parts in a select work before they are assigned a specific instrument for performance.

The ensemble meets three times a week for 40 minutes of instruction.

Repertoire is selected from a variety of sources. They include, but are not limited to, Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman's Orff Schulwerk Music for Children, and publications by other specialists in Orff pedagogy.
