The Reading Program is designed for students who have difficulty reading in accordance to expected performance at Iolani School. The average Iolani student performs a year or more above grade level. Students in the Reading Program can generally read at grade level but have difficulty keeping up with their peers and lack confidence in their ability to read well. Therefore, an individualized program is developed for each student to meet diagnosed needs.
A balanced reading program is incorporated in contracted assignments which include: silent reading, vocabulary development, comprehension strategies and development, language arts, listening activities, and self-directed readings. The program also emphasizes developing self-esteem and positive feelings through successful and safe experiences with reading.
Five classes are available to accommodate students in grades seven through ten. Students in grades seven and eight are grouped together in three classes while students in grades nine and ten are grouped together in two classes. All five classes meet on a daily basis. The classes are called "Reading" in Upper School and classified as non-credit although students receive a letter grade for the course.
