This course is intended for scientifically motivated juniors and seniors who have completed a Biology and Chemistry course. Strong writing skills are required, and a critical reading score of 80% or above is recommended. A highly qualified sophomore may petition the instructor to take the course.
Course Description:
The purpose of AP Biology is to provide interested students with an opportunity to participate in a college level course in a high school setting, with the possibility of advanced placement and/or credits as they enter a college or university. The course follows the sequence of topics outlined in the May 2006 Advanced Placement Biology Course Description Booklet by the College Board. This includes a set percentage for three general biological areas: molecules and cells, heredity and evolution, and organisms and populations. Eight major themes are stressed throughout the course, in particular the basic laws of entropy and enthalpy.
Since biology cannot be fully appreciated or understood without a variety of laboratory experiences, all 12 suggested laboratory investigations are completed. In addition to virtual labs, four to six Saturday laboratory sessions, approximately six hours in duration, are held at 'Iolani School to perform hands on investigations.

Course Description:
This course begins with a review of important Precalculus concepts and the use of a graphing calculator. Students study the topics in Differential and Integral Calculus that are covered in the College Board AP Calculus course description. An intensive review for the AP exam takes place in May.

Students are required to have a graphing calculator that can graph functions in an arbitrary window, find the zeros of a function, numerically calculate the derivative of a function, and numerically calculate the value of a definite integral. A TI-83 plus or a TI-84 plus is recommended. Students are also required to have a scanner to transmit quizzes and tests to the instructor.

Prerequisites:
This course builds upon a foundation of mathematical reasoning that should be acquired before enrolling. It is intended for juniors and seniors with knowledge of mathematics at the level of a second course in algebra and strong problem solving and abstraction skills. A student in the AP Computer Science A course should be comfortable with functions and the concepts found in the uses of functional notation, such as f(x) = x - 2 and f(x) = g(h(x)).
Previous programming experience is not required but would be very helpful. This course is equivalent to a first year university or college level course and the content is covered quickly.
Course Description:
The goal of this course is to teach object-oriented programming, which has become an important paradigm in all fields of computer science. Java is an object-oriented language and is the current language of choice to teach this type of programming. Students who complete this course will have learned object-oriented design, and should be able to develop well-defined algorithms to solve problems and write the object and application classes to implement them. The programming concepts covered in this course include loops, arrays, lists, recursion, sorting and searching techniques, polymorphism, inheritance and interfaces. The case study required for the AP examination is also covered in detail.

Students will be required to read A World Lit Only by Fire by William Manchester before the course begins and use The Western Heritage Since 1300 by Kagan, Ozment, and Turner (eighth Edition) as the primary text for the course.

Course Expectations:

Students in an online course need to be more successful at reading comprehension and retention than students in face-to-face classes. The absence of face-to-face communication puts the responsibility on the student to be motivated and learn from reading.
The course is designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam in May. To do this successfully requires a serious commitment of work on the part of the student. Survey courses in history require memorization of facts as well as higher level thinking skills.

Course Description:
A.P. Physics B is the equivalent of a year-long trigonometry-based survey of Physics course for students majoring in the life sciences, premedicine, some applied sciences, as well as other fields not related to science. The course provides a systematic development of principles of physics with emphasis on problem-solving and building on physics concepts learned in a first-year course of physics. Topics include Newtonian mechanics, fluid mechanics and thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics, and atomic and nuclear physics.
Laboratory experience is an important component of the course where students learn to design experiments, measure real phenomena, organize and critically analyze data, draw inferences, and communicate results. To satisfy College Board requirement of hands-on, face-to-face labs, monthly weekend lab sessions (about 6-8 hours each) at `Iolani School are required.
