The Lower School Halau is open to all students in grades four through six. Students attend classes three times a week in the Upper School dance room. This introductory class focuses on developing the fundamentals of hula as well as introducing some Hawaiian language and history. Students are introduced to both the ancient form of hula (kahiko) and the modern form ('auana). The concepts and dances taught during the semesters are performed at various shows during the year such as May Day and the Dance Showcases at the end of each semester. If the schedule allows, sixth graders may also participate in the Hawai'i Secondary Schools Hula Kahiko Competition in the Middle School Division. The Halau may also perform at community events outside of school as a way of sharing the love of hula as well as giving back to the community.
Hula students have the opportunity to experience other forms of dance from visiting guest artists made possible by the Tam & Young Arts Chair. During the 2007-08 school year, the students were able to participate in a master class with members of the Broadway cast of The Lion King led by 'Iolani graduate Charlaine Katsuyoshi '94.
The Lower School Halau enables students to strengthen their performance skills, increase their self-confidence, and learn to work together as "One Team" through hula.
