‘Iolani sweeps Science Olympiad

‘Iolani sweeps Science Olympiad

February 4, 2012 - Teams representing ‘Iolani School finished first and second at the Science Olympiad Regional Competition on Saturday at Leeward Community College.

The two ‘Iolani squads  -- Team Caff and Team Decaff -- competed in Division C (grades 9 - 12) against nine other teams from schools across O‘ahu. Both teams worked very hard, starting their preparations in August for this eight-event Leeward Regional Science Olympiad.

The competition was very close between the two ‘Iolani teams, and in many of the events placed first and second. It was neck-and-neck as the judges tallied up the score, but in the end, Team Decaff managed to come out on top with 18 points to Team Caff's 22.

Unfortunately, only one team per school is allowed to move on to the state competition on March 3. Therefore, the three teams advancing to states are: ‘Iolani Team Decaff, Mililani (27 points) and Moanalua (39 points).

Both teams would like to thank Ms. Finnemore, Dr. Lindsay and Mrs. Fujinaka, who helped prepare them for the Regional Events, as well as Mr. Jeff Sato and Mr. Jeff Malins, who coached the building events. Also a big mahalo is extended to the ‘Iolani Science Department, which provides the financial support for the teams! Without all of this assistance, none of this would have been possible.

Team Caff:
Amane Morigami '13, Arnold Chang '13, Blake Tsuzaki '13, Christian Rodriguez '13, Erin Main '12, Eun Ah Cho '12, James Teruya '13, Jasmine Ying '13, Kevin Suzuki '13, Kirsten Peterson '12, Max Matsuda-Hirata '12, Michael Mow '13, Rachel Ki '12, Tara Srirangarajan '13, and William McQuiston '13.

Team Decaff:
Courtney Kobata '13, Deanne Yugawa '13, Evan Lum '14, Jarret Lin '13, Jordan Van Duyne '14, Kimberly Peterson '15, Matthew Callahan '14, Michael Silva '13, Mitchel Kwock '12, and Sarah Oyadomari '14.

The team manager/photographer is Nick Yim '13.

The rookie Middle School Science Olympiad team won 1st place for the Middle School division and will also advance to States

"...but in the end, Team Decaff managed to come out on top with 18 points to Team Caff's 22."
This doesn't make sense? If we came in first and second place, with 18 and 22 points respectively, then how did Mililani get 27 points and Moanalua get 37?

Fewer points == better.

I was a little confused by that statement also. Maybe the fewer points a team has, the better. Perhaps some clarification could be offered.

Lower points wins; it's like golf. And 'Iolani didn't place first or second in all the events, just most.

Click on the above link and you can see how each team fared on each individual event. The score is based on the sum of ordinal rankings in each event. Lowest score wins.
