‘Iolani wins Hawai‘i Science Bowl

January 28, 2012 - A team of ‘Iolani School students won the Hawai‘i Regional Science Bowl on Saturday at Honolulu Community College, defeating Punahou School, 76-16, in the finals.

The Raider state championship squad was captained by Max Matsuda '12, and included Arnold Chang '13, William McQuiston '13, Michael Mow '13 and John Sakamoto '12. They were assisted year-round by 'Iolani's "B Team" of Kevin Suzuki '13, Courtney Kobata '13, Evan Lum '14, Nicholas Lim '13 and Stefan (Josh) Rasay '14.

The team will represent Hawaii at the 2012 U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. on April 26 - 30.

After placing first in their preliminary division, the Raiders played Hanalani School and were down at halftime. But they rallied and advanced to the semifinals where they faced Maui High School, the defending state champions.

That back-and-forth match was decided when William buzzed in and correctly answered an Earth and Space question to register a 38-34 victory, sending 'Iolani to the finals versus Punahou.

"These kids have put so much into their studies and Max deserves huge credit for really motivating the team and being the leader," said Mr. Randyll Warehime, the team's coach.
