Wintery days in kindergarten

February 7, 2012 - As part of their science and social studies curriculum, ‘Iolani School kindergartners study the seasons and weather. In recent weeks, their teachers have integrated various activities with a winter theme into the curriculum.

Here is just a sampling of a few fun activities the kindergartners participated in during this unit of study:

  • Math -- made snowflakes
  • Social studies -- studied basic needs and learned that we need to wear warmer clothing, learned about various jobs people do in the winter, learned about Groundhog Day
  • Reading/language arts -- read a variety of literature tied to the winter theme and wrote stories about winter
  • Science -- made ice cream
  • Physical education -- learned about various kinds of outdoor activities to do in the snow or ice (ice skating, skiing, snowboarding)
  • Art -- made a snowman out of clay and glazed it

As a culminating activity, they have a "Winter Dress Up Day" to simulate a winter day of fun. Everyone comes to school dressed up in warm winter clothing. The morning begins with hot cocoa and marshmallows together. Then, they walk over to the Lower Gym (with the air conditioning turned up) to “ice skate” and pretend that they are in the snow! The students and teachers make snowballs out of recycled paper and have snowball fights. After returning to their classrooms, they make ice cream.
