Social Studies

The Lower School social studies program is a multi-faceted curriculum which integrates academics (geography, history, economics, and the study of political and social systems) with the goal of becoming active, involved, and caring citizens.

The curriculum dovetails with the goals of 'Iolani School as it seeks to guide students in recognizing values and behaviors important to themselves, their families, class, school, and community. Building upon this self-awareness, the students explore the world around them.

Teachers use a variety of instructional strategies and methods of inquiry to provide a clear, sequential progression of concepts and skills.  Students take excursions, share learning and collaborative activities with students of other grades, invite guest speakers and presenters, and gradually integrate technology and multimedia methods into projects.  Current events and multicultural experiences further enhance the social studies program.

Many social studies units are taught using the thematic model of learning, which integrates subject curriculum and interdisciplinary activities. For example, the fourth graders, in their environmental studies unit, graph water usage (math), write and film "Save Our Environment" commericials (social studies), learn about composting (science), and create PowerPoint presentations about environmental issues (language arts).

Service learning is an important component of the curriculum.  Students take an active role in helping the community through long- and short-term projects.  Past projects have included: clearing Makiki Stream of plant overgrowth, collecting towels and making dog treats for the Humane Society, feeding the homeless in Waianae, and documenting the experiences of World War II veterans.

Through rich and varied learning opportunities, students demonstrate an understanding of their world and the contributions they can make through their awareness and involvement.
