The Religion Department offers students an opportunity to gain insight into other faiths and cultures, from world religions to Christianity. Students compare and evaluate the religious influences on society. A solid academic foundation in the Bible is provided, utilizing a critical approach. Students also develop a better understanding of self, and acquire personal decision-making skills. In addition, an appreciation of Iolani's heritage is developed.
As a Christian school, Iolani recognizes its responsiblity to present the Gospel. At the same time, Iolani recognizes and respects those of diverse beliefs. Beginning in eighth grade, three courses in religion and the Bible are required of all students, and electives are available in grades 10-12. Weekly Chapel attendance is a part of the Iolani tradition. It is up to the individual student, however, to respond to the Christian message.
The chaplain provides instruction for those students who wish to be confirmed in the Episcopal Church. He also serves as a pastoral counselor to students, faculty and staff, and, as requested, provides sacramental and pastoral services.
