British Literature surveys major British writers from Chaucer to Eliot, placing the literature in historical and philosophical contexts. Students write not only analytical and persuasive papers but also original satires and sonnets. Every student must take either this course or American Literature.

  • Restoration and Eighteenth Century Poetry (Dryden, Swift, Pope, Gray, Johnson)
  • Romantic Period (Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Austen, Byron, Shelley, Keats)
  • The Mayor of Casterbridge
  • Twentieth Century (Thomas, Shaw, Housman, Hardy,Yeats, Lawrence, Eliot)
