English 8 is a year-long required course which offers students a varied and sequential study of reading, writing, and language. Students develop reading skills through short stories, poetry, drama, novels, folk literature and mythology. They develop writing skills through essays, stories, journals and narratives. In both 7th and 8th grades, students examine the structure of the English language and study grammar, usage and mechanics.

- Summer Reading - The Hobbit: introduce the Hero/Quest Theme; test, essay(s), class discussions
- Mythology Unit - Myths and Legends: Greek and Roman myths and hero theme
- Short Story Unit - Selections from Junior Great Books Series 8: "Sucker," "Rules of the Game," "White Horse," "Graduation."
- Short Story Unit - Selections from Literature:"Goodbye, Grandma," "The Monkey's Paw," "The Lady or the Tiger," "Tell-Tale Heart."

- Maintain an English 8 Notebook
- Maintain a writing folder - graded work, revisions - corrections
- Correct compositions using The Keables Guide Common Errors handout
- Reinforce and expand literary terminology
- Refine and review grammar: parts of speech, parts of sentence, sentence combining, phrases, clauses, verbals
- Create a variety of compositions: expository, creative, narrative, descriptive, analytical
- Reinforce and expand discussion skills
