ENGLISH 9 is a year-long speech-centered English course designed to help students find and develop their “voice” both as a speaker and as a writer. The course is divided as follows:

1st Quarter

  • Summer Reading: When I Was Puerto Rican
  • Literature, poetry
  • Non-Fiction writing:  Personal Narratives
  • Timed writing
  • Prose readings
  • Vocabulary from Puerto Rican

2nd Quarter

  • Non-Fiction writing:  Cause-Effect essays
  • Timed writing
  • Narrative poetry interp
  • Prose/poetry interp
  • Vocabulary from speech texts 
  • Vocabulary from MLK & JFK

3rd Quarter

4th Quarter

Additional ongoing requirements include:

WRITING A SELF-ASSESSMENT -- after each oral performance. 

USING THE KEABLES GUIDE -- to correct grammatical and technical errors on formal papers. Now available online!

OBSERVING PERFORMANCES -- students will observe public speaking skills in the real world by attending one performance per semester (i.e., the school play, a guest speaker, etc.). One of the two observations will be of a Speech/Debate Tournament. A schedule of tournaments will be given to students early in the year.

OUTSIDE READING -- Each student is asked to read at least two books during the year from the list attached. 

LEARNING VOCABULARY -- students will have a vocabulary exam every quarter (from 9th grade on). Quarterly lists have approximately seventy words which are selected from the literature of the course. Students are expected to know definition, part of speech and how to use the word.
