Self-Assessment

ORAL PERFORMANCE

WRITTEN ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES

After watching your performance on videotape a couple times, write a self-assessment of your performance.  It should be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman 12-point font and be 2-3 pages long.  Follow these guidelines.

General Expectations:

  • Use manuscript form.  See the Keables Guide (available in hard copy through the bookstore or on-line through the Iolani website).
  • Write carefully so that your assessment is free of errors, uses proper grammar and punctuation, and has correct spelling and punctuation.

Specific Expectations:

  • Begin with an introduction that establishes what you plan to do in the assessment.
  • Critique the delivery of your performance.  Consider poise, rate, volume, vocal and nonverbal expression, articulation, eye contact.  Use one paragraph for what you did well and one paragraph for what you feel needs improvement.
  • Critique your selection.  Consider why you chose it and whether or not it was a good choice for you and for this assignment.
  • Discuss the impact the selection and performance of it had on you as a performer.  Consider any insights you may have gained and/or how significant the performance was for you.
  • Reflect on what you learned through this performance.  Consider specific areas for improvement (focus on two or three specific delivery areas you plan to work on and what you plan to do to improve them), what obstacles you overcame, and what you gained as a performer.
  • Grade yourself.  What do you think you deserved for this performance and why?

This Self Assessment is due WITHIN TWO DAYS AFTER YOU PERFORM.  Although it will be accepted late, you will receive a penalty for the lateness.  If you have a conflict that makes it difficult for you to watch your tape during these two days, let me know.  You will receive your critique sheet and grade at the time the assessment is turned in.  The assessment will be instrumental in your improvement, especially if you give it thought.
