Each February, band students from public and private schools on Oahu participate in the Oahu Band Directors Association Solo and Ensemble event. They choose to perform works written for solo and piano accompaniment, as well as with various combinations of ensembles. Their performances are critiqued and scored by judges, from which they may qualify for medals in recognition for their outstanding presentations. Friends and family also attend to listen and show their support. The diligent and fortuitous effort these young musicians exhibit in practicing for and performing at this event transform into valuable personal experiences and instrumental skills developed, regardless of a tangible qualification!
The medals listed and earned by the students are classified in three categories: Gold – highest level of difficulty, Silver – medium level, Bronze – entry level. Ribbon color signify quality of performance: Blue – superior, Red – excellent.
