Musician Shenan Brown '99

Seven years ago, Shenan Brown '99 was an Iolani School senior. Today, he's a super star in Japan. He's part of the hottest new musical group, just  coming off a nation-wide tour and releasing a third CD.

Shen and Micro make up the Jawaiian Regae duo Deftech which has gone multi-platinum in Japan. Their first album, My Way, sold close to 2 million copies and their second album hit one million in sales.  They released their third album in April and recently made a 23-stop tour across Japan from Sapporo to Okinawa this past summer.

Deftech made it to the top of the Japanese charts (ORICON) on their independent record label, Tensai Baka Records.

While on vacation back home in Hawaii, Shen visited Iolani School on September 15 and spoke to students about his music career. After graduating from Iolani, he went to the University of Hawaii for two years but decided he wanted to change his path. He sold his most valuable possession, a 1993 Honda Prelude, and moved to Japan. He wrote a song called My Way. And from there, the popularity of Deftech soared.

He thanked his Japanese teachers at Iolani and encouraged students to pursue their dreams. Following his talk, Shen graciously signed autographs for the dozens of students and fans in the audience.
