World Class Harpist to Play

Hawaii music lovers have an opportunity this Sunday, April 27, to hear one of the finest young harpists in the world when Melody Rose Lindsay presents a concert, Harping Around the World at 5:30 at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Avenue.

The artist, Melody Lindsay, was recently chosen to represent the United States at the 2008 World Harp Congress in Amsterdam. 
 
Melody is sixteen and a junior at 'Iolani School. 
 
Her program this Sunday features Marcel Grandjany's Fantaisie and an arrangement of Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue by Eleanor Fell.
 
Melody will also perform music from countries around the world and two of her own compositions, an arrangement of Keali'i Reichel's Kawaipunahele and a tribute to Hawaii's astronomers at UH Manoa's Institute of Astronomy. 
 
In addition to her selection to the Congress, Melody was awarded a Deane Sherman Fellowship to allow her to travel to the Netherlands where she will also perform at the newly constructed Bimhuis Muziekgebouw on July 19.

Melody has performed throughout the United States and Europe and made
her world radio debut on Public Radio International's hit show, "From the
Top" accompanied by pianist, Christopher O'Riley. 
 
She received accolades for her performance at the 2005 World Harp Congress in Dublin, Ireland where she performed works by Hasselmans, Pierne and Andres. 
 
Melody has also performed the Dittersdorf and Handel Harp Concertos with the Honolulu Symphony.

The youngest student to be accepted into the preparatory harp program at Indiana University’s School of Music, Melody studies with Professor Elzbieta Szmyt and with Mrs. Constance Harding Uejio, Principal Harpist of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra.  

Melody has received numerous awards and prizes including: American Harp Society Competition prizes in 2003 and 2005, the 2005 American Harp Society Mildred Biehn Johnson Award, the 2005 World Harp Congress Project Award, scholarships from the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra Associates, the Honolulu Symphony Associates’ first Dora Derby Scholarship Prize and a 2008 Morning Music Club Scholarship Award.

Melody is a Cultural Ambassador for the From the Top  program and is a popular performer at numerous churches, benefits, hospitals, retirement centers, schools, nursing homes, and public radio and television stations throughout the United States. 

Since 2002 Melody has appeared as part of a duo act, "The Nutcracker Nuts" with her little brother, flautist and organist, Christopher Lindsay.  Articles about her experiences have been published in the Harp Column Magazine and on the From the Top and PRI websites.

Currently a junior at Iolani School, Melody is a scholarship recipient and the president of the Iolani Stargazers Club.  Melody sang in the Hawaii All-State Choir in both 2007 and 2008 and enjoys karate, soroban, economics, science, and astronomy.  Her favorite subject is Advanced Placement Physics B.  

Melody’s goals for attending the 2008 World Harp Congress in the Netherlands are to play well and to promote peace and global goodwill through music and friendship while tasting a lot of Holland’s cheeses, "especially gouda and edam."
