Hana Hou for Halau

The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) had their annual Installation and Scholarship fundraiser dinner this past Saturday at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

The event was attended by 400 people, including Governor Linda Lingle, Mayor Mufi Hanneman, and many other dignitaries and community leaders.  Presidential scholarship recipients included Iolani students Tiffany Ho '06 this year and Nolan Chung '06 last year.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the Iolani Halau even though they had just performed at the Dance Showcase at the NBC Concert Hall the previous night.

This was the last public performance of the Halau with Uncle Ed Collier as its Kumu Hula as he is retiring this year, and the OCA wanted to make it memorable.

Iolani Board Member and Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, Muliufi Hanneman, introduced Uncle Ed and the Iolani Halau. The Mayor spoke of  all that Uncle Ed has accomplished in both the Hula community and for Iolani School. He awarded Uncle Ed with a well-deserved commendation along with a maile lei. It was a great tribute to a man who has given so much to students, school and community through the years.
