Iolani is one of only 10 schools statewide to be featured at the Hawaii International Film Festival 2005. The HIFF First Annual Student Showcase is devoted to showcasing the “creative masterpieces from Hawaii’s budding young artists” on October 29 and 30 at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
Iolani is fortunate to have three student projects selected for viewing. Showing in Student Showcase 3 on October 30 at 1 PM is Chris Fong’s ’05 Hanging Over which “beautifully and stylistically deals with teen drug abuse, through impressive visuals, music and content.”
Jonah Okano’s’ 05 The Wages of Virtue in which people’s actions “set off a chain of reactions” follows in this same showcase.
On October 30 at 3 PM, also in Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, is Tai Sunnland’s ‘05 comedy Finding Leonardo in which an artist and his brother go through many obstacles before finding their art. Tai’s piece stars Zac Matayoshi’ 05 and Nathaniel Anderson ‘05 along with Joanna Sotomura ‘05 who was featured in the October 7, 2005 Mid Week as an “upcoming actress.”
Tai’s piece will be the final video exhibited in the four student showcases that spread over two days.
At least one other selected film that will appear in the Fall HIFF is also Iolani related. A movie by Brianne Castillo-Huang, '02. is also included in the festival.
Mie Omori, '07 has the lead in Fishbowl. The film is directed by Kayo Hatta and is based on the book Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers by Lois-Ann Yamanaka.
Fishbow showed on October 27 and was shown on Waikiki beach over the weekend of October 29-30. Later in November it will be shown on PBS.
"Hopeless in Honolulu" is produced by Ryan Ishii '00 and Nelson Quan '03.
Admission is free and viewers may obtain tickets by going to the HIFF Dole Cannery Box Office prior to October 29 or at the Doris Duke Theatre on the day of the performance.
