Musicians Win State Awards

These students competed in the 2005 Hawaii Music Teachers Association annual competition on November 5 and November 11. 

Each student prepared intensively over many months and performed three memorized solos for the judges. 

Students were rated on performance technique, musicianship, interpretation, projection and stage presence. 

The level of competition was uniformly high. 

In the violin division, 9th grader Celia Ou won first place at level 4, seventh grader Teresa Ou took second place at level 3, sixth grader Iris Kuo was third at level 3, and Blaise Tesoro, a fifth grader, won Honorable Mention at level 2. 

Ten Iolani students ranging from kindergarten through eleventh grade took part in the piano competition. 

Participants included seventh grader Tiffany Cheung, ninth graders Amy Ko,Eve Tang, and Julie Bree Horie, tenth grader Leslie Kim and junior Dianna Dai.

Kindergarten student David Huang took second place in the K-2 category. Sixth grader Kienen Koga also came in second in the level 3 competition. 

Two eighth graders, Kevin Park and Ashlyn Koga were awarded Honorable Mention and second place respectively at level 4.
