Student Makes NPR Debut

Iolani eighth grader, Melody Lindsay, will perform for a national public radio audience tonight, December 15, when Public Radio International visits the Historic Hawaii Theater to tape its nationally distributed show "From the Top."

She will perform the first movement of Handel's Harp Concerto accompanied by world-renowned pianist, Christopher O'Riley, the host of the show.

Melody has also been honored to be one of the few American harpists selected to perform at the World Harp Congress Focus on Youth program in Dublin, Ireland next summer.

The show has been brought to Hawaii in large part through the generosity of Mark Wong, Iolani Class of 1975, of Commercial Data Systems.

The repertoire on this all-Hawaiian kid show will include: James Perlman, bassoon, age 13 from Paia, performing the Bassoon Concerto in E minor, III. Allegro by Antonio Vivaldi; Melody Lindsay, harp, age 13, from Honolulu performing Handel’s
Harp Concerto, Op.4, No.6, HWV 294, I. Andante-Allegro;
  and The Enchante Trio:  Laura Keller, 16 year-old violinist, 17 year-old Dayna Furusawa, cello; and pianist Tiffany Hyun, age 16, all from Honolulu, performing the Piano Trio No.1 in D minor, Op.49, by Felix Mendelssohn.

The show will also include pianist Yohsuke Miyamoto, age 18, from Honolulu and Daniel Carvalho,slack key guitar, age 14, from Kailua, whose repertoires have yet to be announced.

The show will be taped that evening and edited for national broadcast later in the winter. NBC's "Today" described the  program as "Exquisite musical performances, punctuated with off-beat interviews and campy skits.  This is classy reality programming.  And you don't have to love classical music to love From the Top."  Don't forget over 250 stations across the United States broadcast this show, so pretty soon everyone who listens will know what a hotbed of outstandingly talented kids Hawaii really is!

Tickets are available only from the Hawaii Theatre Box Office at 528-0506, and discounts are available to HPR members. For additional information on the performers as well as their photographs, just go to ww.hawaiipublicradio.org and click either on the Events page or the From The Top box at the top right.
