Int. Boys XC Win Big
The Intermediate Boys' Cross Country team won its second consecutive ILH title.
Under cloudy skies and after a light shower, seven Intermediate Boys took off running the challenging, 2 mile ILH Cross Country Championship course at Central Oahu Regional Park this past Saturday. There is always strong competition at ILH events, and today was no exception. The team took second place at the `Iolani Intermediate Invitational a week ago to Kamehameha, and did not want a repeat of that.
Kasey Chun (8) and Michael Diebold (9) took the lead for much of the race, but could not keep it as Joshua Freitas (KS) and Kelvin Naito (Pun) edged past them. An outstanding effort was given by all seven of the `Iolani team, which managed to get 5 runners across the finish line within the first 12 runners, giving `Iolani the win with 33 points. Kamehameha took second with 46 points, and Punahou finished third with 63 points.
Congratulations go to 8th graders Kasey Chun, Troy Esaki, and Ian Wong and 9th graders Michael Diebold, Trevor Farm, Joey Harpstrite, and Drew Oyama who ran in the race, and special thanks and congratulations to team alternates Kenton Nakamura, Zach Masuda, and Scott Matsuwaka for their support.
Other highlights from the Cross Country Championships include a 1st Place finish in the JV Division for Justin Higa (9) and a 3rd place finish for the JV Team. The Varsity Team finished in 2nd with Tyler Mulloy crossing the finish line 4th, and Trevor Leong 11th. Sean Dudevior (12), Borys Pleskacz (9) and Clay Okazaki-Train (12) were the other three runners to complete the scoring for `Iolani and finished in the top 15 runners in the ILH Varsity Division.
State Varsity XC Championships will be held on Maui on Friday, November 1 at Kapalua.
