January 2, 2009

by Al Linsky

The Intermediate basketball team continued their rampage through Division 2 on Friday at the 'Iolani gym.

The victim this time was University.

Quarter ending scores were 14-8, 27-16, 44-20 and 55-21.

The game was really never in doubt even though University held a small lead after playing even for the first few minutes.

The next game for this team will be the start of the playoffs at Palama Settlement, 2:30pm, Saturday January 10th.

Intermediate 1 Boys Basketball Over Puns, 48-42
by Colby Takeda
January 2, 2009

In the first round of the Intermediate Boys Basketball Playoffs, ‘Iolani’s Intermediate 1 team faced Punahou.

Punahou gained a small point margin, one that they maintained throughout the first quarter as the Raiders matched them point for point. The first quarter ended 12-14.

The Buffanblu started to pull away during the second quarter as they suddenly became hot behind the arc, making three 3-pointers on three consecutive drives. Staying calm, ‘Iolani continued to score and managed to end the half 23-27.

The ‘Iolani team came back from half time with a spark that I didn’t see in the first half, giving them the momentum to make key plays on both offense and defense. Reece Foy made an early steal that allowed Tanner Nishioka to convert it to well earned points. On the next play, Foy hit a baseline jumper to give ‘Iolani its first lead of the game at 32-31. Tough defensive rebounds by Jon Ide and Josh Hannum also helped this recharged team keep up with Punahou’s scoring and gave them a two point lead going into the last quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, 'Iolani continued to use the team’s deep bench by playing most of the players and constantly rotating the squads, a pattern that had been effective in the previous quarter.

The first half of the quarter was filled with many quick plays, started by a jumper from Tahi Caldwell. Then much time passed with submissive defense and careless errors. The score was then tied at 42 with 1:31 left on the clock.

With time winding down, Nishioka made a basket to put ‘Iolani up 44-42.  Troy Young not only put points on the board throughout the game, but he also made a critical steal with 55 seconds left in the game, preventing  a Punahou comeback. A few more points from Foy and a steal by Andrew Okimura secured the 48-42 win for Iolani.

The ‘Iolani Boys Intermediate 1 team will move on to play the boys of St. Francis School Monday, January 5, at the ‘Iolani School gym.

JV Girls Basketball Falls To Puns, 32-30
January 2, 2009

by Al Linsky

This was a tough loss.

The Raiders trailed throughout the first three quarters, usually by only a few points, but the Buffanblu did just enough to keep that all important lead.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, though, the Raiders went on a significant run that got them to a 30-25 lead with 3:28 to go in the game.

At this point, things started to look much better.

The Buffanblu didn't panic, though, and grabbed the momentum right back by running off five quick points to tie it at 30-30 with 2:17 to go.

The last two minutes were marked by errors on both sides, mostly bad passes leading to steals or missed easy shots.

The result was only one basket was scored in those last two minutes, and it was the Buffanblu getting it to secure the victory at 32-30.

Boys Vars II Basketball Falls To Puns, 32-30
January 3, 2009

by Al Linsky

I arrived at this game about halfway through the second period. At that time we had a lead of 14-9.

The Raiders were able to hold that lead and went into halftime with a lead of 19-13.

By the end of the third quarter, the lead was gone and the Buffanblu enjoyed a 23-21 lead which meant the third quarter was a 10-2 run for the resurgent Puns.

The fourth quarter stayed very tight with the winner looking like the last team who scored would walk away the victor. Although the Raiders had some great chances down the stretch, the last scorer came from the Puns to deliver a very painful loss, 32-30.
