Varsity Basketballers Defeat MPI, 47-33

by Al Linsky

The Raiders wasted no time getting back on their horse, so to speak, after the loss to top ranked Punahou as they displayed why they are ranked number two in the state.

Jamie Smith had another big game, scoring 22 points, amassing 8 rebounds, and probably most important, 6 blocks. Although Jamie Smith was a very good scorer last year, this year she's been able to hit the outside shots with regularity. Just another reason to give opposing coaches nightmares.

The first quarter, though, saw the Owls hang tough, make most of their shots, and finish all tied at 17-17, led by Johnelle Kapua and Jordan Kealoha.

The Owls cooled off in the second quarter, though, as the Raiders started to pull away with a nice contribution from Lori Yamashita off the bench as Jamie concentrated more on defense.

Three pointers really started to hurt Mid-Pac as the Raider guards heated up. It was 38-29 at the end of the third and finished at 47-33.

For Mid-Pac, Ashley Yamachika had 7, Johnelle Kapua 10, Jordan Kealoha 5, Keaton FcFadden 6 and Jenna Savusa 3.

The Raiders were led by Jamie Smith with 22, Kylie Ahlo had 2, Lahela Usui 2, Lori Yamashita 4, Chanel Hirata 11, and Dayna Jandoc 6.

MPI had one 3 pointer, by Yamachika. 'Iolani had a huge 6 3-pointers, led by sharpshooter Hirata with 3, Jandoc with 2 and one by Smith.

Next up for the Raiders is Sacred Hearts at Sacred Hearts on Tuesday.

IAA Basketballers Drop Close One, 41-39

by Al Linsky

For most of the game, this was not a close one. The Puns jumped out to a quick 12-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

By the half, the Raiders had closed it to 17-21, but errant passes and missed opportunities still plagued the Raiders.

The third quarter saw the Puns pull away to a double digit lead at 34-22.

The Raiders never gave up, though, and slowly got back in the game and actually had a chance to pull it out. It was 36-40 with 2:12 left. 37-40 with 56 seconds left. The Raiders had the ball with 6 seconds left at 39-41 and just got the shot off in time, but it just missed.

There is a lot of talent on this team and they should do well as they learn to play together better.
