Int. 1 Boys Lose To Kamehameha, 33-32
by Colby Takeda
January 7, 2009
I arrived during half time of the championship game between the ‘Iolani Intermediate 1 boys team and the Kamehameha 1 team with the score tied up at 16.
The beginning of the third quarter was evenly matched between the two teams. ‘Iolani would score, then Kamehameha would score, then ‘Iolani, then Kamehameha and so on.
Jon Ide, Troy Young, Jason Alcon, Tahiarii Caldwell, and Reece Foy all scored two points for ‘Iolani, giving them a small 26-23 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter was filled with suspense as Kamehameha suddenly took a one-point lead. They then increased their lead to three points with 33.3 seconds left.
‘Iolani had to act quickly and turned to Troy Young who drove to the basket for two points with 15.7 seconds left.
Still down by one, 'Iolani pressured Kamehameha on their inbound pass, forcing an overthrown pass that flew out of bounds.
‘Iolani gains possession. The ball is passed by Tanner Nishioka to Troy Young who sinks another critical basket giving ‘Iolani a one point lead with seven seconds left.
Kamehameha drives the ball to their side of the court, passes it to one of their key shooters who shoots a jumper from just inside the arc. As the ball is released, the buzzer goes off and amazingly, the shot is good.
‘Iolani loses, 33-32.
The Kamehameha crowd roared as the ‘Iolani crowd stood stunned. I couldn’t believe what just happened. Luckily, the loss now forces a tie for first between the two teams. They will play again on Saturday to decide the champion, a game I will be sure not to miss.
