Girls Score Important Win Over Warriors, 47-34

by Al Linsky

The outside shooting was scorching at Iolani gym, on Thursday evening, as the #3 Warriors tried to move up in the rankings.

But from the opening gun, the Raider 3 pointers started falling, led by Chanel Hirata who was 5 for 5 outside the 3 point line.

With the 3 pointers raining down on them, the Warriors knew they were in big trouble.

It was 14-5 at the end of the first quarter. After a 16-0 second quarter and a 30-5 lead the game was pretty much over.

Of course, the Warriors never gave up and did play better and start to close the gap in the second half. After a much better third quarter for the Warriors, the lead was down to 34-18.

At one point, deep in the fourth quarter, the Warriors actually closed it to 7 points, but the Raiders quickly ran off a bunch of points to close it out at 47-34.

Chanel ended up with 19 points, followed by Jamie Smith with 15, Kylie Ahlo with 5, Dayna Jandoc 5, Hailey Maeda 2, and Shauni Watanabe with 1.

Need I even mention that the next game is 7:30pm, Saturday, at Iolani against Punahou? If you only go to one game all season, I suggest you make it this one.

Boys Win, 49-37, Over Mid-Pacific Owls

by Al Linsky

Unlike the girls' varsity game against Kamehameha, where I felt that the score made the game seem closer than it was, the boys game against MPI was really a pretty close, exciting game.

The Owls are tough. Led by top Owl player Marcus Holyfield's 13 points, they stayed close until the end.

It was 9-8 at the end of the first, 23-16 at the half, 34-28 after three, and 49-37 at the end. But there were a few ties and the Owls even had a small lead at one point.

For Mid-Pacific, Marcus had 13, Devon Takenaka 8, Ryan Kurihara 6, Jaime Rivera 6 and Sampson Won 4,

The Raiders got more balanced scoring as Taylor Mounts led the way with 17, Pablo Warner had 12, Lionel Fujioka 7, Kela Marciel 4, Bricen McCartney 3, Jarrett Arakawa 3, Trevyn Tulonghari 2 and Andrew Skalman 1.

The Owls were able to hit on five 3-point goals as the Raiders had three.

The Raiders next game will be 4:30 pm on Saturday, at Iolani, against Maryknoll.

Intermediate Girls Fall To Puns, 33-31

by Al Linsky

This was a nail biter all the way through with the lead never getting large on either side.

It was 11-8, Puns, at the end of the first quarter. The Raiders tied it at 15 with 2:02 left in the half. The Puns pulled away to lead 19-15 by the end of the half.

The second half was more of the same as the Puns nursed a small lead, 25-22, at the end of the third.

With 1:07 left it was 27-29. As the tension mounted, the Puns hit a big 3 to make it 27-32. With only 29 seconds left it looked like all was lost, at least to this observer. But after a free throw and a huge THREE by Katie Tom, it was 31-32 with 10 seconds left. The Puns made a foul shot to make it 31-33. The Lady Raiders got the ball back but time ran out!
