I've seen quite a few varsity level games lately. Girls Varsity basketball vs Kamehameha, then Punahou. Also Boys and Girls Varsity Soccer vs Punahou. I also caught the end of the Girls Varsity basketball game vs Sacred Hearts.

Not one of these contests went anything like I expected. If I were a betting man, I'd be broke!

This game, though, pitting the Varsity Basketball Raiders vs the number 9 ranked Owls of MPI, went about as expected. The Owls, led by Marcus Holyfield, are a very good team. But, on this night, the Raiders showed great balance and depth which eventually wore down the Owls and paid big dividends in the final minute.

The quarter scores were 14-9, 28-20, 42-32 and 58-45. The Owls did get as close as 5 at 47-42 with about 4 minutes to go but the Raiders got a good run going, especially in crunch time at the end. This was a good win over a good team. Next up is another big one as the Warriors come to 'Iolani gym on Tuesday at 6:30.

Varsity II Boys Falls To Kamehameha, 49-32

January 10, 2009
by Al Linsky

This game started out well for the Warriors as they quickly ran to an 8-0 start before the Raiders could find the scoring touch.

It didn't get much better for the Raiders, though, as the Warriors kept up the pressure on both offense and defense.

The Warriors led at the end of every quarter, 14-4, 26-9, 40-21 and 49-32 at the end.

There were a few positive areas of play, but the one I especially noticed was the play of Larsen Leu off the bench. He showed the kind of intensity needed and seemed to give the team a lift every time he came in.
