Varsity Girls Soccer Dominate MPI
January 13, 2009

Not too many ninth graders make varsity teams. On this day, an 'Iolani ninth grader had one of those "career days" that athletes dream about.
Although the Raiders were dominating, there was no score through the first 18 minutes. Twyla Hamasaki then swooped in and shot from about 30 yards out, pretty much in the center of the field to the lower left corner. 1-0, Raiders.
It was still 1-0 at halftime as the Raiders continued to dominate.
Ten minutes into the second half saw Twyla make a run down the right side. She shot from about 25 yards out and hit the upper left corner. 2-0, Raiders.
With about 15 minutes left in the game, Pressley Pawn placed a corner kick in perfect scoring position. There was a big crowd right in front of the goal and about three quick shots. I didn't see who got it but checking with the team later it was, you guessed it, Twyla. 3-0, Raiders.
This game was played mostly with the reserves getting major playing time and girls playing different positions. It was somewhat strange seeing Stephanie Dote playing striker, and getting at least one good scoring opportunity. Anyone who has watched Stephanie at sweeper for all these years will understand what I mean. I'll never forget the huge smile on her face as she went in for the shot. They certainly had fun!
Next game is Friday, 4:15 at 'Iolani against Sacred Hearts.
