Important Win Over Pac-5
by Al Linsky
There has been a lot of excitement lately over the 'Iolani varsity teams, girls' and boys' basketball, and girls' soccer.
Let's not forget about boys' varsity soccer!
They too are battling for a state championship berth.
Going into yesterday's game with Pac-5, Kamehameha was 7-1-1, the Raiders 6-1-1 and Punahou 5-2-1.
Pac-5 was next at 3-4-2, but they had a victory over Kamehameha and a tie with Punahou so they were a dangerous opponent.
I expected a close game. Wrong!
In the first minute, Blaine Gonsalves found Brock Granger on a nice cross. 1-0, Raiders.
At eight minutes, Nick Goo picked the ball out of the air and put it behind the goalie. 2-0, Raiders.
At ten minutes, Brock went over everyone to head a high ball over the goalie. 3-0, Raiders.
At about twenty minutes, it was Brock again, this time from about 35 yards. 4-0.
At thirty minutes, Paul Nakamoto put one in from the right side, about 30 yards out. 5-0.
At about twenty-five minutes in the second half, Brock got another (his fourth of the day) from about 25 yards to the lower left corner. 6-0.
This win sets up a big game with Punahou on Friday, 4:15 at Kapiolani.
The way I see it, a win on Friday should pretty much assure a state berth. A loss puts the Raiders into a tie with Punahou for second and throws the ILH into a logjam.
Big game!
