JV Girls Goes Down To Kamehameha, 44-38
by Colby Takeda
January 14, 2009
The ‘Iolani JV girls Basketball Team sustained an unfortunate 38-44 loss against the team from Kamehameha School.
‘Iolani was down throughout most of the first quarter, but was able to gain a one point lead going into the second quarter.
‘Iolani then got really unlucky in thesecond and third quarters as the ball just didn’t want to go in, while it seemed like Kamehameha was scoring on every drive. Kamehameha led both quarters but ‘Iolani’s determination to recover showed as they stepped up their defense and hustling. The third quarter ended with ‘Iolani trailing, 21-28.
Kamehameha slowed the game down in the fourth quarter, draining the clock while looking for the high percentage shots. ‘Iolani used this time to catch a breather and was able to make it a two point game with 32 seconds left. They were unable to convert after the missed free throws by Kamehameha and faced a tough 44-38 defeat.

JV Boys Take Close One, 46-44, Over Punahou
by Colby Takeda
January 14, 2009
In another exciting match up between the ‘Iolani JV Boys basketball team and a Punahou team, it was ‘Iolani who came out on top, only this time, in overtime.
‘Iolani started the game with an early 4-0 lead, but lost it as Punahou’s tall posts were able to easily grab rebounds and convert them to points.
The second quarter started 12-9 in favor of Punahou. A couple of 3-pointers, a technical, and a charge, put ‘Iolani back up at the end of the half, 23-22.
Once again, ‘Iolani came out strong in the second half as they scored twice before Punahou was even able to get the ball to their side of the court. They now had a 5-point advantage on Punahou. But as expected, Punahou was not about to let ‘Iolani take the win that easily. A Punahou 3-pointer put them in close range going into the fourth quarter.
It was a teeter-totter of scoring in the fourth quarter as the teams took turns leading the scoreboard. Down by three with eleven seconds left in the game, ‘Iolani was able to hit a long-range jumper to tie it at 40. Punahou was unable to score in the remaining time and put this duel into overtime.
The extra period was intense!
‘Iolani drove to the basket for their points while Punahou used their height on the inside to get their points. It came down to a tie until an ‘Iolani player hit a crucial jumper with 3.9 seconds left. Punahou in-bounded the ball, catapulted the ball from beyond half-court, but was unsuccessful, giving ‘Iolani the win, 46-44.
A couple of players led the scoring front, but it was through the good ball control and passing of the whole team that made this win possible.
