Paddlers in Mixed Conditions

Paddlers Face Choppy Conditions
January 17, 2009

The 'Iolani paddling crews experienced two completely different sets of conditions in their races last week.

Tuesday's boys' and mixed races, as well as Wednesday's girls' races were extremely choppy, due to the strong southerly winds. This, combined with the resulting three foot swell, required focus and strength of mind to complete. Just completing a race on either of those days was a feat in itself.

Highlights were another third place finish from the girls' JV II crew and a second place finish by the Varsity I crew. Although the Varsity II girls did huli, they were able to right the canoe quickly and continue on. The stalwart JV II girls worked hard and earned a point for fifth place.

Saturday's race was a stark contrast to the mid-week competitions.

A cool north wind kept conditions clean, and the water crystal clear. However, the wrap from the huge northwest swell provided some challenges in the form of large and breaking surf. Again, our crews were up to the challenge and performed well. The Varsity I girls are a race away from qualifying for the state championship regatta for the second year in a row.

The last races of the regular season take place this Tuesday and Wednesday at Magic Island, with a start time on both days of 4:15 p.m.
