Varsity Boys Soccer Wins 2-0 Over Damien
January 24, 2009
by Al Linsky
The first time these teams played, the Raiders won 11-0.
I expected another lopsided game today, and even though the score was a close 2-0, this was still a pretty lopsided win.
The Raiders controlled the ball almost completely throughout the game.
The Monarchs did have one good scoring opportunity late in the second half, but goalie Craig Yugawa came out and challenged to make an excellent save and preserve the shutout.
Raider goals were scored by Patrick Shimoko and Taylor Van Etten.
Patrick's came in the first few minutes as he controlled the ball in the center of the field, about 30 yards out, and put a hard shot into the lower left corner.
Taylor's goal was set up by a nice feed from Carl Gibson at about 12 minutes. Carl slid a perfect pass from the right side to a waiting Taylor who finished it off nicely.
From that point on there was no scoring, although the Raiders had numerous opportunities seeing quite a few hit posts or just misses.

Varsity Boys Basketball Takes Win Over Puns
January 24, 2009
by Al Linsky
The Puns had one loss, to the very strong Warriors.
The Raiders were undefeated, having beaten the Warriors in a very close, tightly contested game.

For the Puns to have a reasonable chance of securing the automatic state berth, they had to win this game. The Raiders, though, had to win to maintain their lead over the Warriors, not to mention the lift it would give the Puns to win this game and throw the ILH into a three-way tie.
Yes, this game was a typical Raider-Pun showdown, HUGE!
It was the Puns who got out early.
They were shooting better, rebounding better, and overall, executing better and quicker. This paid off in leads of 13-9 and 27-21 for the Puns at the end of the first two quarters.
In the third quarter, the Raiders tightened their defense and quickened their pace holding the Puns to only five points and closing the lead to 32-31, Puns.
The fourth quarter stayed as tight as can be with the score tied at 37 with 1:38 to go. It went back and forth with the Raiders forcing play and coming up with some big steals to escape with a 41-40 win and send the large Raider-friendly crowd home very happy.
