Some Sports Move Seasons

'Iolani School student athletes will be affected by the recent  Hawaii High School Athletic Association's move of some sports into different seasons effective in  the 2007-08 year.  The HHSAA decision follows a similar change in Michigan mandated by the United States Supreme Court in enforcing Title IX.

The sports which will shift seasons include:

  • Boys volleyball from the fall to spring
  • Girls softball from winter to spring
  • Girls basketball from spring to winter
  • Girls intermediate and junior varsity soccer from fall to winter (and now coinciding with girls varsity soccer and boys intermediate, junior varsity and varsity soccer)

Winter sports generally begin practices in mid-October and November. Spring sports begin in late January and February.

To accomodate all soccer teams now playing during the winter season, 'Iolani will have one junior varsity girls soccer team instead of two as in the past. The girls and boys soccer programs at 'Iolani will now have the same number of teams.

"'Iolani is not considering dropping any other teams from our offerings," said co-athletic director Carl Schroers.  'Iolani has 107 ILH sports teams in different levels and sports.

Student athletes should check the web page's Weekly Calendar and the Athletic calendar for information about try outs and practices.
