Two Big Football Wins

Intermediates Crush Punahou

'Iolani Intermediate Football vs Punahou

The final score was 55-14, Raiders. Yes, that's right, 55-14.

Although I didn't see the first game of the season, against Kamehameha, I heard that it was a last minute win for the Warriors and a low scoring affair.

Not this one. The offense was on fire and got hotter as the game went on, while the defense continued to frustrate the Punahou offense and force a few too many errors for the Puns to mount a consistent drive.

Jordan Lee scored four touchdowns, the first three at 5:40 of the first quarter, and at 7:12 and 3:31 of the second quarter. Punahou scored once at 9:02 of the second quarter. Add another touchdown right before the half ended by Kody Mento and it was 27-7 at the break.

At 6:29 of the third quarter, Josh Hannum at quarterback ran one in to make it 34-7.

Jordan Lee then scored his fourth touchdown of the day dragging tacklers with him into the endzone to make it 41-7 at 3:53 of the third quarter.

Kody Mento then got his second TD with 2:55 left in the quarter, 48-7.

With 6:26 left in the fourth quarter it was Trey Muraoka's turn to get on the board, 55-7.

The Puns did score one with about a minute to go to make the final score 55-14.

There was constant shuttling in and out of players which made it hard for this observer to keep track of who was playing, but it was nice to see so many get a chance to get in the game.

There were 3 quarterbacks used in the game. Josh Hannum played the bulk of the game with Reece Foy getting some substantial relief time in the second half.

And, Saphyre Rezentes made a few nice plays at quarterback at the end. This is the first time I've seen a female at QB, ever. No one I talked to remembered seeing this at 'Iolani. I wouldn't be surprised if this was a first for the ILH, maybe even Hawaii. Anybody know?

Varsity Defeats Word of Life 35-0

by Al Linsky

Word of Life is mainly a running team. I only remember about a half dozen pass attempts and not many of those were completions, if any. This makes sense since WOL is a new team this year, and it is a lot easier to install a running game than a passing heavy offense.

The Raider defense, though, did an excellent job of bottling up the WOL runners. The defense also caused and recovered quite a few fumbles and made some timely interceptions to keep the Firebrands on their heels.

Kellen Imada got the Raiders on the board first at 5:28 of the first quarter with a nice run. 7-0.

At 5:28 of the second quarter, it was Keenan Hoohuli's turn. 14-0.

Two minutes later Matthew Padaca made a nice interception (or was it a fumble recovery, I'm not sure) and took it all the way to make 21-0.

With 1:41 left in the half, Kellen struck again, 28-0. And to top off the big quarter, Keenan got his second TD. It was 35-0 at the half.

At half time the crowd was treated to a great show by the band and the 'Iolani dancers. Unfortunately, this is also when the rain started and the rain would pretty much continue through the rest of the game which probably contributed to no scoring in the second half.

Jarrett Arakawa started at quarterback and played most of the game, with Kela Marciel again playing multiple positions, including a few plays at quarterback.

It was a good, solid win for the Raiders as both the offense and defense played very well.
