Girls JV and Varsity Bowling
by Al Linsky
The 'Iolani bowling teams, both JV and Varsity, took on University High at the Ft. Shafter bowling facility.
Both teams went into the match undefeated.
Each competitor rolls three strings with total pin fall determining the victor. The winner is the one who wins at least two strings. But, it helps to win all three games because at the end of the season, won/loss record determines which two teams make it to states.
Junior Varsity - 3-0
The games were really tight--especially for the JV's second game.

In the end, though, the Raiders were able to pull out the win. It came down to the 10th frame, last bowlers, last balls on both sides. 'Iolani's anchor bowler, Shanna Tashiro bowled a spare in the 10th frame and got a strike on her next ball -- two very badly needed marks.
University had a chance for a spare to squeak out the victory, but missed it by an inch or so. The Raiders, in the end, won by only six pins. 'Iolani played together as a team in all their games and were supported by their teammates. In bowling, every pin is important, so every player contributed to the count.
Varsity 2-1
The varsity lost the first match and won the next two against University Lab School. 'Iolani, to this point had a 770 total pin average per game to University Lab Schools average of 657, so on paper, the Raiders shouldn't have had a problem. But that's why it's a sport....anything can happen once the match starts.
Bowlers were Robyn Totoki, Traci Rivera, Brittney Guro, Kelli-Ann Lum, and Darcy Shindo. The first game went to University by 14 pins, 687 total pins to 701 pins for UH Lab school as both sides were struggling picking up their spares.
In the second game, the Raiders came back to win by 98 pins, 758 total pins to UH Lab Schools 660 pins. High bowler was Robyn Totoki with a 203. Lianne Chung subbed for Kelli-Ann.
In the third game, the Raiders caught fire and won by 172 pins, 773 to 601 for UH Lab school. High bowler was Darcy Shindo with a 198.
