JV Tennis Loses First Match

Boys JV Tennis Falls In Tight Match

by Al Linsky

It was the battle of the unbeatens at Iolani tennis complex Monday afternoon. And what a battle!

This was the most exciting tennis match I've seen since the Intermediate girls beat Punahou in the championships last year (just had to throw that in).

This was the last match for both teams in the first round of play. We weren't quite at full strength but we still thought we had enough to squeak out a win.

The 2nd and 3rd doubles matches were over first, both matches going to the Puns. We needed to win all three remaining matches to pull it out and there was a chance we could do it. All three matches were close.

Second doubles split sets and went to a 10 point tiebreaker. 0-1. Bad start. 1-1, 1-2, 2-2. 3-2. 4-2!, Then the points came in bunches with some great touch lobs, all the way to 10-2. We were on the board! Now it was 2-1, but we still needed to win the final 2 matches at 1st and 2nd singles.

It was not to be. Both matches went to 10 point tiebreakers, both went right down to the end, but the last point went the wrong way.

But this was about as close a match as there can be and the tennis was great. We'll get them next time!
