The 'Iolani gym is site to a variety of activites, from PE classes to blood drives, assemblies, school games, and even chapel services.
But today the gym rocked as the Los Angeles Lakers practiced for an upcoming exhibition game. 
Because of scheduling conflicts with facilities at the University of Hawaii, the Lakers were in need of a gym to practice in.
"UH called and it was either Klum gym without air conditioning or our gym with air conditioning," said 'Iolani co-athletic director Eddie Maruyama. "We were happy to help out."
Students gathered outside the gym doors, waiting for a peek at the professional basketball players. A lucky few got autographs before the players boarded their buses after practice. Some were cheering, chanting names, and showing their enthusiasm for the game. 
The Lakers and the Golden State Warriors will play October 9 and 11 at 7 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center in NBA preseason games. For tickets, call 944-2696 or www.eTicketHawaii.com
In the meantime, Head Coach Phil Jackson will be guiding the Lakers through practices at 'Iolani this week. His assistant coaches include Jim Cleamons, Frank Hamblen, Kurt Rambis, Brian Shaw, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Craig Hodges, and athletic trainer Gary Vitti.
