Puns Prevail in Polo

Punahou Too Good In ILH Water Polo Finals

by Al Linsky

According to Bob Hogue, Punahou has won the ILH Water Polo Championship in all but three of the past 35 years.

That is quite an accomplishment and what the Raiders were up against on Friday night at Iolani Pool.

The crowd was large and boisterous and ready to see if the Raiders could pull the upset.

The first half saw the Raiders mostly staying with the powerful Puns. The first quarter saw the score go 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3 and 2-4.

The Puns then started to stretch the lead, all the way to 2-7 before 'Iolani could score again. At the end of the half it was 4-8. There was certainly still a chance but the Puns were starting to dominate.

The third quarter saw the Raiders mostly play even with the score going to 5-8, 5-9, 5-10 and 6-10. The Puns, though, got two quick ones to end the quarter which started to put the game out of reach at 6-12.

The fourth quarter saw more of the same with the final score of 8-15 pretty much telling the story.

Punahou was the better team on this night. The Raiders gave it their all but will have to wait until next year to try to overcome history.
