For those who are unaware of what cheerleading has become in the last decade or so, and I would guess that's a lot of you, cheerleading has changed. To my eyes, it's more like a combination of gymnastics and dance. These girls practice hard and do a lot more than just lift the enthusiasm of the crowds at major athletic events.

Last night, at Kekuhaupio Gym on the Kapalama campus, the 'Iolani Raiders went up against the Warriors and the Puns for a chance at the lone HHSAA berth awarded to the ILH for the State Championships.

If you've ever watched the Warriors compete, or even at an athletic event, you know why they dominate this sport. They are, well, awesome.

Since I see them so often, I can't help but admire their abilities. I think everyone expected them to win last night, and they did. What was of more interest to me was the battle for second place with Punahou.

The Raiders stepped up the difficulty of their routine and performed pretty close to flawlessly.

That performance was good enough to take second place and conclude the season with a great finish and confidence that the program is moving in the right direction.
