Boys Int. Black Soccer Starts On High Note
by Al Linsky
As Coach Ahlo listed good strategies at the end of the game, one was to pass to Jordan Lee up top. Hard to argue with that strategy, as Jordan had one of those games where it seemed that every time he touched the ball he scored.

After about 20 minutes of jockeying for control with a pretty evenly balanced Punahou Blue team, Jordan broke down the middle and got in tight, 1-0.
About five minutes later, Jordan got loose for a breakaway, 2-0.
With only a few minutes left in the half, Joey Harpstrite put one in on a rebound after a high shot hit the crossbar, 3-0.
The Puns then scored off a free kick from about 35 yards slightly left of center, 3-1, as the half ended.
In the second half, Joey Harpstrite was in the right place again as he got a shot off a Jordan Lee rebound, 4-1.
About halfway through the second half, Jordan scored again with the Punahou defense hanging all over him, 5-1.
As the game neared the end, the Puns rallied, yielding them a nice goal from the corner of the net, 5-2.
And that's how it ended.
It is hard to imagine that this team has only been together for a week.

JV Girls Basketball Outlasts Roosevelt, 31-25
This game was looking like a blowout for about three quarters.
'Iolani raced to 6-0 that ended at an 8-3 lead at the quarter.
The lead expanded to 18-6 at the half.

The Rough Riders had plenty of opportunities as they were getting good shots and their share of rebounds, but the shots just wouldn't fall. At the end of the third quarter it was 22-12. This meant that the third quarter was actually won by Roosevelt, 6-4.
And the momentum started to switch.
The Rough Riders, who never quit, now started to hit. They crept closer and closer, but the Raiders dug down and held at the end when they really needed it to come away with a 31-25 win.
There is a lot of talent on this team, and they are fun to watch.
The next game is at Radford, Thursday, 6:00 p.m. as the preseason against OIA teams continues.

Varsity Girls Dominate Roosevelt 60-32
The JV's looked as if they were going to have a blowout, but it ended up pretty close.
The varsity looked like a blowout early and so it stayed.

At the end of the first quarter it was 16-5 and 31-9 at the half. The Raiders ran and played a smothering defense that took the Rough Riders out of their game.
The Rough Riders had the size advantage, but the 'Iolani speed became a huge frustration as the Rough Riders always seemed a step behind.
The final score of 60-32 underestimates the dominance in all phases of the game as 'Iolani shot superbly, passed crisply and controlled the boards. Whether it was three pointers from the guards or Jamie Smith operating inside and being an absolute monster on the boards, especially the defensive boards, it was just too much for the OIA visitors.
The next game is at 7:30 at Radford, Thursday, right after the JV's take on Radford.
