Int Girls Soccer Win Narrowly

Int Girls Soccer in Squeaker Over University, 1-0

by Al Linsky

Finally, clear skies. But I still brought my umbrella to Kapiolani Park to see 'Iolani play an intermediate soccer match against University.

University is a good team. They lost to Kamehameha Blue 2-0, Kamehameha's stronger team, and did well against Punahou Blue. I expected a close game.

As it turned out, though, 'Iolani dominated both field position and shots on goal.

Play was almost completely in front of the University goal, but a combination of excellent goalkeeping, shots slightly off target and the dreaded "hit the post" or "hit the crossbar" shot, resulted in a very close game.

There were no goals in the first half. It wasn't until about seven minutes into the second half that the Raiders scored on a nice shot from the right side into the low left corner.

That would be the only goal of the game. This would produce some tense moments in the last minute as University had their best offensive rush to try for the tie at the end. The Raiders defense, though, was up to the task and 1-0 would hold.
