Int. Blacks Finish Strong Over Maryknoll, 37-29

by Al Linsky

The first three quarters of this game were close, real close, at Iolani's lower gym on Monday night.

The Blacks were able to finish the first quarter with a four point lead, 13-9, but that was the biggest lead for either team until late.

At the half, Maryknoll clung to a one point lead, 18-17.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle with neither team able to score. Going into the last quarter it was 20-20.

The fourth quarter saw the Raiders catch fire. Increased intensity, good defense and better shooting led to a strong 17-9 run to seal the victory at 37-29.

JV's Dominate In 71-32 Win Over HBA

by Al Linsky

The first quarter ended with the Raiders sitting on a one point lead, 14-13, with little evidence of what was to come.

I've seen some overwhelming scoring explosions in my time, but the second quarter 26-4 run was up there in total dominance. By the half it was 40-17 and the game was pretty much over.

The Eagles tried to regroup and never gave up, but the Raiders had answers for everything they tried.

At the end of the third quarter it was 57-27 and the final score was 71-32.

This was a very impressive season opener.

Int. Black Boys Lose 46-32 to Punahou Gold

by Al Linsky

I expected a close game at Punahou when the Blacks faced the Golds. And that's what I saw until 3:12 of the third quarter.

The first quarter was real tight with the Blacks holding a 6-5 lead at the end.

The game stayed as close as can be with ties at 12, 17 and 19. The half would end at 19-19.

With 3:12 left in the third quarter, Troy Young, who already had two fouls, got two more quick ones. With four fouls, and a quarter and a half to go, he was forced to sit down to be saved for the end of the game.

The Golds took advantage and ran off 9 quick points before the Blacks could regroup and adjust.

Although the Blacks did eventually adjust and play the Golds pretty even the rest of the way, the damage was done as they could not get any closer than 8 the rest of the way. The final score was 46-32.

Intermediate Red Boys Lose To Blues 58-43

by Al Linsky

As in the previous Black vs Gold game at Hemmeter Field House, I expected a good, close, intense game. And, again, that's what I got for the first half.

It was 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, in favor of the Reds. The Blues pulled ahead in the second quarter, but it was only 22-19 at the half and the outcome was very much in doubt.

One minute later, due to outrageously good play by the Blue's guard, number 12, the score was 29-20. He continued on a rampage, making steals, hitting threes, and getting loose for layups.

The Reds struggled for an answer to this one man wrecking crew, but could find none. It was 42-28 at the end of the third quarter and 58-43 at the end.

It wasn't so much that the Raiders played poorly, because they didn't. Much credit is due the Blues for a really outstanding performance.

JV Girls Fall To Punahou Blue, 35-24

by Al Linsky

The first half was just what you'd expect at a Raiders-Puns game, great intensity and desire to win.

At the end of the first quarter, the Raiders led 8-7.

It was 14-11 at the half and things were looking good.

The third quarter, though, saw the Raiders go ice cold while the Puns started to really click. This resulted in a 14-3 run that pretty much put the game away. By the end of the third quarter the reeling Raiders were looking at a 17-25 deficit.

The fourth quarter saw the Raiders regroup and play the Puns even the rest of the way. But the damage was done. Final score, 35-24, Puns.

Intermediate Girls Win Thriller Over Puns

by Al Linsky

What a game!

It went from as tight as could be, to a big lead for the Raiders, to a lead for the Puns, to - well, I'll tell you about it.

The first quarter was close. How close? How about 1 point? It was 7-6 at the end of the first quarter.

Neither team could pull away in the second quarter. Again, the Raiders ended the quarter with a one point lead, 15-14.

After the half, the Raiders caught fire and ran off six points in a row, 21-14. Just as I was starting to feel a little comfortable, the Puns ran off 10 points in a row to take a 24-21 lead. The Raiders would finally score to make it 23-24 at the end of three.

It went back and forth from there with the Raiders taking a slim, one point lead into the last two minutes, 27-26. With 1:23 left, the Puns got free for a nice layup, 27-28.

Both teams turned up their defense which resulted in a lot of steals, but no more scoring, until, with only a few seconds left, the Raiders put on a ferocious rebounding effort that resulted in a basket with one second left.

29-28! Terrific game!
