The JV girls' basketball team pulled off a close 23-22 victory in an evenly matched duel with Punahou’s JV blue team on Monday.

Both teams played strong offense and defense throughout most of the first quarter, tying the game at six points. 'Iolani benefitted from the quick ball-handling and aggressive offense of Ashlyn Yokoyama and Jelene Wong.  Aimee Taniguchi and Alisha Kodama contributed to a well-rounded team effort with their tough inside game, snagging crucial rebounds and boards.

A set of hard-earned steals and easy lay ups put ‘Iolani up 13-9 going into halftime.

Punahou started to make up points in the third quarter on a couple of  three point plays. With 23 seconds left in the game, ‘Iolani was up 23-22 on a quick board from Aimee.

A quick foul by Punahou brought Ashlyn to the line, but she missed, giving Punahou the ball back.

With ten seconds left in the game, a Punahou player made a three point shot, but it was disallowed since the Punahou coach had called for a time-out right before the ball was released.

Still down by 1, Punahou was unable to score in the remaining seconds, allowing the Raiders to hold on for a 23-22 victory.
