The Red and the Black

It's Red Over Black In Intermediate Playoff

by Al Linsky

Six teams made the playoffs in the ILH Girls Intermediate Soccer playoffs this year.

Unfortunately, it worked out that the Raider Blacks would play the Raider Reds in the first round.

I usually look forward to Black vs. Red matches since they are always intense and tend to bring out the best in both teams. This time, though, I was a little sad knowing that one of these teams would not be able to continue.

At about 10 minutes, Steffanie Tanaka momentarily got free for a strong shot from about 20 yards on the right side. It shot into the lower left corner and got the Blacks off to a 1-0 lead.

About four minutes later, a defensive mixup resulted in an own-goal for the Reds to tie the game at one. And that's the way the half ended.

Two minutes into the second half, Daisy Pascua shot from about 15 yards out in the center to the low left corner. 2-1, Reds.

At about 20 minutes, the Blacks were called for a penalty that resulted in Jill Shimabuku taking the penalty shot. She shot low and left making the final score 3-1.

Congratulations to both teams on a well played game and to the Reds as they continue on their quest for an ILH Championship.
