In one of the last games of the year the ‘Iolani girls JV soccer team outscored a fast Punahou Gold team for a decisive 3-1 victory.

Punahou attacked early, driving right through the ‘Iolani defense, and shooting for what seemed like the first goal of the game. Luckily for ‘Iolani that goal was recalled after the referee made a late offside call.

‘Iolani then shifted out of first gear and dominated play, keeping the ball on Punahou’s half of the field. Meanwhile, dark clouds ominously gathered until finally letting loose over the Waipio soccer field.

Having left my umbrella at home, I eventually had to retreat to my car after unsuccessfully attempting to endure through the downpour. The rain only lasted for a few minutes, but that was all it took for the field to turn into mush. Girls started to slip and slide, but the sluggish field conditions were not enough to keep the ‘Iolani girls from producing quality scoring opportunities. Their perseverance paid off as Alicia Buntenbah-Leong easily tapped in a nicely placed ball by teammate Rachel Ono for the first goal of the game. One minute later, the half ended, with ‘Iolani up, 1-0.

Punahou got back into the game during the second half after an unlucky one on one situation between a quick Punahou forward and ‘Iolani goalie Jaime Rosenberg, tying the game at a goal each.

Lauren Makishima of ‘Iolani was then able to place a ball over the Punahou goalie’s head from a direct kick 10 yards behind the penalty box, returning the lead to ‘Iolani.

Both goalies were then put to work, as both teams took many shots on goal. ‘Iolani finally took advantage of a corner kick when Cari Ann Nada got a foot on a loose ball in the goalie’s box and scored another one for the Raiders. Punahou tried hard to recover from their two-goal deficit, but was unable to in the remaining 10 minutes of play giving ‘Iolani the victory, 3-1.
