Volleyball Off to Fast Start

Both the boys and the girls have reason to feel good about the way they have begun their volleyball seasons.

The two teams both played championship games over the weekend: the girls in the Ann Kang Classic held on home turf at Iolani, and the boys in the Waimea Tournament on Kauai.

The Girls

The women advanced through the losers bracket after losing to Bakersfield and actually upset the eventual champs, Los Alamitos, to force a championship playoff before falling to the Griffins 15-7.

Megan goes up for the blockLos Alamitos is ranked nationally and will be sending one of its top hitters to Duke next year.  They gave the Raiders a top-notch experience playing against the best in the county.

Coach Luis Ramirez pronounced himself well-pleased by his young team's effort citing the hustle shown on defense and the play of middle blocker Megan Burton and hitter Leinani Keanini.

Setter Kapua Kamana'o provided the spark to the Iolani offense.

The Boys

In a manner that exemplified the One Team philosophy, the boys' varsity volleyball team powered its way to the championship of the Waimea High School Volleyball Tournament held this past weekend in Waimea, Kauai.

Every member of the team contributed as the Raiders won 17 straight games after a first-game loss to sweep through the competition, beating Castle two games to none in the Saturday afternoon final.

In addition, the JV team, playing against both varsity and JV opponents in the same Waimea tournament, won the Consolation Bracket Championship, finishing the tournament by winning its last six games in a row.  The JV also used the One Team approach:  all eleven players were part of the lineup in every game."
