Field House, Bray Bust Blessed

After a year of construction, the One Team Field House and two new singles tennis courts were completed this past summer. These facilities, along with a Father Bray bust and display wall, were blessed in official ceremonies on Thursday, September 15.

All Lower School students and faculty attended, while Halau Iolani performed to open the ceremony.

Located on the Diamond Head side of campus, the field house provides an open-air, covered play area for Lower School students during the day. The roof is partly translucent to allow natural light in, but the roof also protects against ultraviolet rays.  Inside the field house is a basketball court with six baskets.

At the blessing and dedication, Headmaster Val Iwashita, Chairman of the Board of Governors James Kawashima, and Dean of the Lower School Fred Okumura all talked about the importance of making Iolani a better place for the benefit of students. They thanked those who made the addition of the field house possible.

Teacher and coach Wendell Look also spoke, telling the children that they are like the different parts holding the field house together. The nuts and bolts, beams and pillars each have different function, but each is vital to the entire structure, just as they are all part of Iolani's One Team.

Iolani's chaplain Rev. Daniel Leatherman and assistant chaplain Diane Martinson-Koyama performed the blessing with salt, water and ti leaf.

Later that morning, the chaplains also blessed the Father Bray display area, that includes a bust of Father Bray, in the athletic complex. Part of the Iolani archives chronicling Father Bray's experience at Iolani were put on display. These included letters between Father Bray and his players, as well as letters Bray wrote to Charles Howard, the owner of Seabiscuit.
